Get an asset valuation for matrimonial proceedings

When a marriage or partnership ends, and one or both parties own business assets, including plant and machinery, commercial vehicles, workshop equipment, or industrial stock, those assets need to be independently valued before a fair financial settlement can be reached. Without an accurate, impartial figure, negotiations stall and disputes escalate.

BTG Eddisons Asset Sales provides independent asset valuations for matrimonial disputes and divorce proceedings, covering the full range of tangible business assets across industrial and commercial sectors. Valuations are led by Richard Temple, a RICS-Chartered Machinery Valuation Surveyor and Registered Valuer.

This page describes a professional asset valuation service. It does not constitute legal or financial advice. Anyone going through a divorce or separation should take advice from a qualified family law solicitor before making decisions about asset division or financial settlements.

How do asset valuations support matrimonial proceedings?

In divorce and separation proceedings, the court requires an accurate picture of all assets held by both parties. Where those assets include business equipment, machinery, vehicles, or industrial stock, a specialist plant and machinery valuer is needed to establish their current market value – the same figure a court or both parties' solicitors will rely on when reaching a settlement.

An independent valuation removes the scope for dispute about what assets are worth. It gives both parties and their solicitors a defensible, evidenced figure prepared by a named, qualified expert, rather than an estimate either side could challenge.

In some cases, courts appoint a Single Joint Expert under the Family Procedure Rules 2010 to provide a valuation that both parties can rely on without commissioning competing reports. Our valuations can be prepared on this basis where required.

Who needs an asset valuation for matrimonial disputes?

Individuals going through divorce or separation

Where you or your spouse own business assets, an independent valuation gives you and your solicitor an accurate basis for negotiating a fair settlement. Without one, you may not know what you are agreeing to.

Family law solicitors

Solicitors acting in financial remedy proceedings regularly instruct independent valuers to establish the market value of plant, machinery, and business equipment held by one or both parties. We work to your timetable and deliver reports in a format suitable for use in negotiations, mediation, and court proceedings.

Mediators and financial advisers

Independent valuations support mediation and dispute resolution by giving both parties a common, evidenced starting point. An accurate figure from a named, qualified expert reduces the scope for disagreement and helps keep proceedings on track.

Why does an accurate valuation matter in matrimonial proceedings?

  • Establish a fair starting point – Without an independent valuation, both parties are negotiating against different assumptions about what assets are worth. A professionally prepared report gives everyone the same evidenced figure.
  • Reduce the scope for dispute – A valuation prepared by a named, qualified expert is harder to challenge than an informal estimate. It keeps negotiations focused on how to divide assets, not on what they are worth.
  • Support court proceedings – Where a financial settlement requires court approval, or where proceedings become contested, a report prepared to a recognised professional standard provides the evidential basis the court expects.
  • Value assets without selling them – A valuation establishes the market value of assets without requiring either party to sell them. This is particularly important where one party wants to retain ownership of business equipment as part of the settlement.
  • Meet the requirements of the Family Procedure Rules – Expert evidence in family proceedings is governed by the Family Procedure Rules 2010 Part 25. We prepare our reports to the standard courts and solicitors expect for use in these proceedings.

How do I arrange an asset valuation for a matrimonial dispute?

Call 0333 200 2041, email [email protected], or complete the form at the bottom of this page. We recommend instructing through your solicitor wherever possible, particularly if the valuation may be used as expert evidence in court proceedings.

An expert visits your premises to carry out an on-site inspection. The expert assesses each asset individually, recording its condition and specifications and photographing it for the report.

The resulting report sets out each asset with a description, condition note, photograph, and assessed value. The valuation basis is stated clearly, and the report is prepared in a format suitable for use in solicitor-led negotiations, mediation, and court proceedings.

“In a matrimonial dispute, the valuation needs to be something both parties can trust. That means it has to be independent, properly evidenced, and prepared by someone who actually knows what the equipment sells for in the real market.”
