Laboratory and pilot manufacturing equipment from the former Haleon toothpaste factory on Norreys Road, Maidenhead, is going to auction, with BTG Eddisons Asset Sales instructed to handle the sale.

The equipment behind the product, not the production line

A toothpaste factory closure usually brings to mind bottling lines and packaging plant. This instruction is different: it is the laboratory and pilot manufacturing equipment used to develop and trial formulations before they ever reached full production.

That distinction was reflected in our valuation. Pilot-scale mixing and testing equipment is built to a different specification than full production plant, and the buyers for it tend to be formulation labs, contract manufacturers and other consumer goods developers – not the general industrial market.

Why R&D equipment needs its own route to market

Selling laboratory and pilot equipment means understanding what each piece was actually used for and who else in the sector would want that exact capability, rather than folding it into a generic plant and machinery sale. It is a smaller, more specialist instruction than a full factory clearance, and it rewards both buyer and selling when treated that way.

Director Paul Cooper adds: “This isn't production-line kit, it's the equipment a formulation team worked with day to day. Selling this requires knowing who else does that kind of work and reaching them directly, rather than lumping it in with general industrial plant.”
